CHICAGO - Motorola Inc. said Thursday its profit plunged 94 percent in the third quarter on sharply lower sales, but the ailing cell-phone maker showed signs of improvement in its cell-phone business and painted a more upbeat outlook for its future...

Its stock jumped 5 percent in morning trading.
While only narrowly averting a third straight quarterly loss, Motorola gave evidence that the worst is behind it and its turnaround effort is starting to gain traction. Handset shipments and its estimate of fourth-quarter results were higher than Wall Street expected, with a slew of new products in the process of hitting the market...

Motorola shares up after profit beats estimates

NEW YORK - Motorola Inc reported on Thursday its first quarterly profit in 2007 and gave an outlook that beat Wall Street expectations, in a sign the mobile phone maker has started to turn around its business.

Shares of Motorola rose as much as 5 percent as investors took heart from the results, which came after two quarters of losses, even though third-quarter profit still fell 94 percent as the company lost mobile phone market share to such rivals as Nokia and Samsung Electronics.
RBC analyst Mark Sue said the results were encouraging but noted that Motorola has a lot of work to do as competition in mobile devices had intensified in the past year...
